The adage goes that when it rains, it pours. Many major banks, including Axis Bank and others, have been cutting back on rewards for Government payments. Now, SBI Cards is joining them in breaking away from the group of card issuers that reward points for using their credit cards to pay Government related expenses.
SBI Card to discontinue rewards on Government Related Transactions in June 2024
SBI Card issued a notice dated March 1, 2024, advising that Government Related Transactions (MCC 9222: Fines, 9311: Tax Payments, 9399: Government Services–Not Elsewhere Classified, 9402: Postal Services–Government Only) will not be awarded reward points. The following Credit Cards will see the reward points earning ability (on Government transactions) disappear effective June 1, 2024.

This effectively shuts down the opportunity for those who use SBI Cards to pay their Government expenses. They should now look for a different card to start getting their Government payments on their way.
Bottomline
SBI Cards has become the latest issuer to stop awarding points to customers when they pay their Taxes or other Government spends. Many cards will stop granting rewards on June 1, 2024.
What is your sense of SBI cards following some other major card issuers to shut down rewards for Government Payments?
