Hilton Honors is running a point purchase promotion until October 5, 2017 where members can buy points at a 50% discount. A minimum of 5,000 points need to be purchased to get the discounted price.
Honors points are usually priced at USD 10 per 1,000 points. Hence the cost to purchase a Hilton point is usually 1 cent and through this promotion the cost of purchase drops down to 0.5 cent each. You can purchase a maximum of 80,000 Honors points at a price of 400 USD instead of the regular price of 800 USD.
50% discount on bonus points is by far the best purchase promotion that Hilton offers and there is definitely value to be had at some Hilton properties, like The Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island. Additionally, if you have Hilton elite status and stay for five nights on points, the fifth night becomes free which further brings down the redemption cost and that can be a real sweet deal.
Last year I did some analysis that suggested that there is value in point redemption at both ends of the spectrum. Of course with the new Hilton Honors program in place there is more flexibility in using Hilton Honors points including the option to pool points with friends and family.
Bottomline:
If you are thinking about purchasing points under this promotion in the next month or so then I’d suggest you first think about where you would like to redeem your points and work out the numbers. Buying points may make sense if you already have an existing balance and need to top up some points to redeem an award you have been considering.
