Passenger slapped on IndiGo’s Mumbai-Kolkata flight by co-passenger; handed over to security forces

Yet another disturbing incident, highlighting unruly passenger behaviour on flights in India, occurred last night, underscoring the reduced tolerance that people in India exhibit while flying.

A passenger was slapped on board by a co-passenger on an IndiGo flight.

On an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata, the flight witnessed chaos onboard when a fellow traveller assaulted a passenger suffering a panic attack. The unsettling episode occurred on IndiGo flight 6E-138 on August 1, 2025, prompting immediate action by the cabin crew and authorities upon landing.

According to eyewitnesses and widely circulated videos online, the situation unfolded shortly before departure as the aircraft was taxiing for takeoff. A visibly distressed passenger began experiencing a panic attack, expressing a desire to disembark and walking restlessly down the aisle, clearly overwhelmed by anxiety.

In an alarming response to the situation, another passenger seated nearby abruptly slapped the distressed individual. The aggressive reaction sparked immediate outrage from passengers and crew members, with fellow travellers vocally condemning the assailant’s unacceptable behaviour.

IndiGo’s cabin crew swiftly intervened, attempting to calm the situation and ensure the safety and comfort of the victim.

Upon the flight’s arrival in Kolkata, the accused passenger was promptly handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and local police authorities. After initial questioning and investigation at Kolkata airport, the passenger responsible for the assault claimed discomfort due to the distressed individual’s behaviour as justification for his actions.

IndiGo responded decisively to the incident, issuing an official statement that asserted its zero-tolerance policy towards aggressive or unruly passenger conduct. The airline reiterated its crew’s adherence to standard operating procedures and stated that necessary protocols under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) guidelines for unruly passengers would be initiated. This includes the potential for the accused passenger being placed on the airline’s no-fly list pending a thorough review by an internal committee.

Bottomline

A co-passenger hit an innocent passenger as he requested to deboard a plane during a panic incident earlier on August 1, 2025. The incident occurred on an IndiGo flight between Mumbai and Kolkata, and the assailant, who has been seen on video to be hitting the other passenger, was handed over to the authorities on arrival in Kolkata. IndiGo has officially confirmed the incident and stated that they acted in line with their Standard Operating Protocols.

What do you make of the incident and IndiGo’s response?

  1. I find it almost as inappropriate for the guy filming the whole episode. Instead of empathising with the person having the panic attack, he is making a reel. He then proceeds to pounce on the person who slapped the passenger in question, but he was only able to record this entire episode because he was already filming the panic-stricken passenger. Highly insensitive.
