Mumbai Airport warns of disruptions to SpiceJet operations in the coming days [Since Withdrawn]

Everyone in the aviation community knows SpiceJet’s financial condition; however, customers still book them ignorantly, not checking the airline’s track record of operations. While the airline is having a tough time dealing with lessors who have not been paid (many of them), the airline now seems to have a new issue.

SpiceJet customers warned of potential disruptions by Mumbai Airport.

In a social media post this evening, Mumbai Airport stated that customers might face difficulty flying out of Mumbai. The operator is specifically addressing SpiceJet passengers only. The message was put out on Instagram, Instagram Stories and X accounts of the airport.

The post reads as follows,

Effective midnight on 13 August 2024, SpiceJet flight operations from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) are expected to be temporarily disrupted. Mumbai International Airport is working with the airline to address the situation to minimise inconvenience to passengers.

Further, the customers are advised to contact SpiceJet if anything goes wrong.

SpiceJet operates a limited set of flights out of Mumbai to Darbhanga, Delhi, Srinagar, Kozhikode, Bhavnagar, Kandla, and Dubai. I checked SpiceJet’s website, and all the flights currently show “on time” for tomorrow’s departure.

This could be a warning shot to get the airline to pay airport dues, which may not have been paid so far, or it could be a genuine attempt to help by Adani Airports, the operator of Mumbai Airport, directed towards SpiceJet customers. Whatever the case, this is the first time I’ve seen an airport directing a message towards an airline, by pointing a finger in the direction of the airline’s passengers.

The post was later deleted. SpiceJet issued a statement,

The passenger advisory issued by MIAL has been withdrawn. Our flight operations in and out of Mumbai are operating normally. SpiceJet and MIAL have worked collaboratively to swiftly resolve a minor financial matter.

I wonder if the matter was small enough that an airport had to publicly embarrass an airline to get it to pay up.

Bottomline

If you are a SpiceJet customer slated to fly tomorrow (August 13, 2024) or onwards, do keep a lookout for any disruptions. According to the airport operator, the airline might have trouble operating out of Mumbai Airport. Since the post has been deleted, who knows what the real state of affairs will be?

What do you think is the play here for Adani Airports to issue such a warning?
