Marriott Bonvoy has been cranking up their reaction to the CoVid-19 crisis. Earlier on, Marriott had granted a full-year extension to everyone who had earned their status in 2019 (for 2020), making their status valid through February 2022 instead of February 2021. Overnight, Marriott has made some more perks and promotional pricing happen for members, which should make things better for members when they finally get back on the road again.

Marriott will grant 50% bonus elite nights to members.

If you earned elite status in Marriott Bonvoy programme last year, Marriott Bonvoy would grant you 50% of those elite nights, up to a maximum of 50 nights this year in your account, gratis from Marriott. For the various status members, these are the number of elite nights they will get credited in their account in July 2020.

For instance, I have eight elite nights in my account at the moment, but as a Titanium Elite, I will get 38 elite nights credited to my account within the next few weeks, even if I don’t make any stays till then. The extra nights could help me get closer to the next status tier, although it won’t as I am already Titanium Elite till Feb 2022, and I won’t be spending USD 20,000 perhaps at a hotel this year. They will also help in getting closer to a Choice Benefit at the end of 2020, which is due at 50 and 75 nights.

Existing Ambassador members can gift Platinum status.

Members who earned Ambassador status in 2019, and will earn 100 elite nights in 2020 (including the gratis 50 elite nights) will be able to gift Platinum Elite status to a friend or family member. This is only for those who already are Ambassadors as of 2019, and will have no bearing on those who qualify for Ambassador status in 2020.

Through July 2020, all redemptions are at off-peak prices.

As a special promotion to encourage members to redeem their points and start travelling again, Marriott Bonvoy will put out over 5,500 properties around the world on an Off-Peak redemption rate for bookings to be made during June 15-30, 2020 for stays through July 31. That means you will get the cheapest redemptions for the next 1.5 months on your hotel stays.

As a reminder, in 2019, Marriott moved to a model of peak/off-peak pricing to account for demand.

 

Bottomline

All of these announcements are excellent news for all Marriott Bonvoy elite members since this gives them reasons to stay invested in the programme and be engaged as well. Also, by encouraging redemptions, Marriott is looking at their members to get out and experience the hotels again during the vacation season.
