Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport reopened on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The part of T1 that reopened on August 17, 2024, has been under construction since 2019 under DIAL’s Phase 3A expansion project. This section, located on the extreme right side of the terminal building, was inaugurated this year. The part of the terminal building that collapsed on June 28 is on the left and centre and remains closed for now. SpiceJet was the first airline to move in. Now, IndiGo will move.
IndiGo to move some flights to Terminal 1 in September 2024
IndiGo has announced the resumption of its operations from Terminal 1 at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, effective September 02, 2024. IndiGo will operate 35 departures daily from Terminal 1 from the effective date.
Domestic flights with flight numbers 2000-2999 will operate from Terminal 2, flight numbers 5000-5999 will operate from Terminal 3 and the rest of the flights will operate from Terminal 1, when departing from Delhi Airport.
The recently expanded terminal can handle up to 40 million passengers annually. Its closure increased pressure on two other terminals, from which domestic flights also operate. Delhi Airport handles about 1,240 daily flights. After these flights are shifted, Terminal 1 will operate at 25% of its pre-disaster capacity.
Passengers taking IndiGo flights must enter T1 through entry gates 5 and 6 on the first floor. All passenger arrivals will take place through dedicated arrivals on the ground floor.
Bottomline
Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1, which has been under redevelopment since 2019, has been opened to airlines and the public effective August 17, 2024. IndiGo will transition flights on September 2, 2024. The older part of the terminal, which witnessed an accident and a roof collapse, has been shut since June 28, 2024, and continues to be closed.
What impact do you think opening up the redeveloped Terminal 1 at Delhi Airport will have on capacity?
