IndiGo expands big time into the Middle East from Mumbai

Jet Airways slots at Mumbai airport are being redistributed on a temporary basis. Vistara and AirAsia India were the first airlines to add more flights from Mumbai. SpiceJet quickly followed by adding a handful of domestic flights and one international flight from Mumbai. The biggest expansion came from IndiGo, that too from the Terminal 2 at Mumbai airport.

In March 2019, India increased the bilateral flying rights between India and Saudi Arabi by 40%. Saudi Arabia has unilaterally allowed Indian carriers to add as many flights as they want to Dammam. There were reports last year that IndiGo will expand to Riyadh by December 2018. But that didn’t happen. Currently IndiGo flies to Dubai, Doha, Male and Muscat from Mumbai.

Jet Airways abruptly cancelled all flights to Abu Dhabi from March 18, 2019. Mumbai dealt a huge blow as Jet Airways cancelled all flights to Middle-East. It is good that IndiGo is adding a few flights to cash in on the demand. IndiGo said that 50% of the expansion in 2019 will be from international growth, and this is just a bonus for them, not having to create the market but land it due to another player vacating the market. They have many more destinations lined up including flights to China this year.

Will you be taking advantage of IndiGo’s new flights from Mumbai?
