Taj currently has two hotels in the Maldives: Taj Exotica Resort & Spa and Taj Coral Reef Resort & Spa. Taj Exotica Maldives is located on the Emboodhu Finolhu island near the capital Malé and Taj Coral Reef Resort is located on the Hembadhu Island in the North Malé Atoll.
On January 29, 2019, there was a fire early in the morning at the Taj Exotica Resort & Spa. The fire was reported by the hotel at one of the Overwater Villas at 4:48 am. It then spread to the adjacent villas. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) quickly responded to the call and was able to bring the fire under control with the help of the staff within 90 minutes.
It is reported that five out of a total of 64 villas were gutted by the fire. All the hotel guests were safely secured. The hotel remains fully operational following the incident.
The Minister of Tourism, Maldives even paid a visit and assured full support and assistance. This is the third incident that has been reported in the Maldives in January 2019. Earlier this month, The Gili Lankanfushi Resort was forced to shut down after a massive fire destroyed seven water villas and the restaurant. Ten days later, the Reethi Beach Resort was temporarily left without electricity after a fire broke out at the island’s powerhouse. In all cases, no one was hurt and everyone was reported safe.
In light of recent events, the Tourism Ministry of Maldives has launched inspections of all resorts, hotels and vessels to ensure safety.
