Earlier in March 2026, we heard that IndiGo’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, was stepping down, presumably as a fallout from the meltdown the airline experienced in December 2025. At the time, it was said that there might be a new CEO in the wings and that an announcement could be imminent.
Ex-British Airways boss Willie Walsh will step in as IndiGo CEO
IndiGo today announced that Willie Walsh will become the company’s new CEO, and he’ll join the airline before August 3, 2026. Willie, an Irish national and a longtime aviation executive, currently serves as the Director General of the airline industry lobby, the International Air Transport Association (IATA). His term there closes on July 31, 2026.
Willie Walsh has spent a long time in the industry, starting as a pilot at Aer Lingus back in 1979. He rose all the way to the CEO position in 2001. From there, he headed to neighbouring British Airways, and then the ownership body of both the airlines, the International Airlines Group, which also owns Iberia and a couple of LCCs, where he spent over nine and a half years.
Willie is a perfect replacement for Pieter from the perspective of the mandate that was handed over to Pieter – to make IndiGo a global airline. In a way, he might even be one better, given that he has experience running both short-haul and long-haul operations and has faced a few IT Meltdowns in his time at the European airlines he has worked for.

Willie Walsh, the current DG at IATA and the next CEO of IndiGo
However, Willie Walsh also enjoyed the reputation of running an operation that was “to the bone”, having cut costs all over the place at British Airways. I’m not sure if he will enjoy the privilege at IndiGo, given I don’t see much they can cut away at, except for Stretch seats, BluChip, long-haul operations, or plane orders, all of which were brought to the fore under Pieter. Also, Pieter was a people person and had a good rapport with many at the airline, and you could see him visiting people across the country and posting about his travels and time spent with employees on the ground. Willie is more of a backroom operator.
Bottomline
Willie Walsh has been picked as the new CEO of IndiGo, following Pieter Elbers’ departure. Walsh has most recently been in charge at the aviation body IATA, but prior to that, was CEO of IAG, British Airways, and Aer Lingus. He’s a well-respected industry executive, so he seems like a logical fit for the company.
