Earn an extra 500 SPG points per night during your stay at the Sheraton/SPG properties

Update: Reader mileflyer confirms this offer is valid at other SPG properties as well. Maybe you should ask for it on your next check-in.

During my last stay at the Sheraton Gateway LAX in January, I was presented with an interesting offer which I thought I’d share with the readers. For your stays at the Sheraton hotels and resorts at participating properties in the USA and Canada, you can earn a F&B credit of $5, or 500 SPG points in your SPG account for every night of your stay you decline housekeeping services, except the day of departure.

At the Sheratons, this is an attempt to promote conservation efforts by encouraging you to use your housekeeping supplies and amenities for longer. You will be provided with a doorhanger in your room, which you need to put up before 2:00 AM to be able to opt-in. This means your room will be skipped by housekeeping and also the bathroom and coffee supplies will not be replenished in your room. You can always call for them separately if you need some more though.

I find this a generous offer, since I usually can go with the same amenities in the room for a couple of days at a go and I do value my SPG Starpoints very much to be able to get some more for a simple thing like this.

You can find a list of the participating properties in the US and Canada here.

Here are the official Terms & Conditions of the promotion:

  • To participate in Make a Green Choice, and be eligible for the $5 food or beverage voucher or the 500 Starpoints®, hang the Make a Green Choice doorhanger on the outside of your guestroom door by 2am or let the hotel know during check-in that you’re interested in opting-in.
  • You are not eligible to participate in the program on the day of departure; it is only on stayover nights. Please note: the $5 F&B voucher is only valid at time of purchase and cannot be combined with other offers. Unused $5 F&B vouchers may be turned in at the front desk before check-out for 500 Starpoints each.
  • If you opt-in to the Make a Green Choice program, housekeeping services will not be available for the day. Please note this includes all room cleaning and coffee & bathroom amenities will not be automatically replenished.
  • If you opt out of the program, but still want to conserve water and energy, you can hang your towels you want to reuse and place your doorhanger on the nightstand to reuse your bed linens. The bed(s) will be made. For fresh towels, please leave them on the floor. For fresh linens, please leave the doorhanger on the bed.

  1. There used to be a separate sign that you can hang out of your door before you go to sleep to get the daily vouchers that you can convert to 500 points. You didn’t have to specifically opt in but these days the front desk folks are asking if you like to opt in to that program each time I check in. Some Hilton’s also have similar program. I think its a great program that works for Hotels as well as its customers. I wish every hotel offer such a program.

  2. I recently received 1500 points at the Westin Gaslamp in San Deigo – so they’re doing it across many SPG properties. I think it’s a great program, as I usually don’t have housekeeping come in, and you can always request more towels/toiletries.

The thing to remember is that you must opt-in — otherwise, if you just put out the “Do Not Disturb” sign, you won’t earn anything.

  3. My last stay in Sheraton Center Montreal earned me 1000 points by declining 2days of housekeeping. I like very much!
