Over the last few years, there has been a lot of shuffling around the Delhi Airport. The usually smooth operations between Terminal 1 and 3 were split into 3, when the Delhi Airport expansion came up for discussion. As a recap, the airport operator ordered all the carriers to move 30% of their flight operations to Delhi Terminal 2 by October 2017.

Pre-pandemic, Go First’s Delhi originating flights had moved to Terminal 2. IndiGo and SpiceJet also moved part of their operations to Terminal 2. Subsequently, in September 2019, SpiceJet, on the other hand, moved their entire operation to Terminal 3 from Terminal 2. During the Pandemic, all airlines were required to operate from Terminal 3, as operations were limited and it helped to have airlines in one place and keep operational costs low for the airport.

With the Terminal 2 of Delhi Airport expansion plans now completed, it has been open and shut as the pandemic continues to make it impossible for travel to be smooth for the time being. In 2020, Terminal 2 was recommissioned in October 2020 as traffic picked up, and then, earlier on in 2021, as airlines started to cut flights because of dropping traffic and new constraints on their schedules, traffic was consolidated at Terminal 3 again.

Terminal 2 Will be operational again on July 22, 2021

Delhi Airport has decided that IndiGo and Go First will have to shuffle around their operations. The airlines will shift their operations on the night of July 21/July 22, 2021 and T2 will be in service at 00:01 AM July 22, 2021.

As is the usual, IndiGo’s flight numbers 6E 2000- 6E 2999 will operate from Terminal 2, Delhi, starting July 22, 2021. To see if your flight is impacted, head here.

Go First has also announced that it is moving all its domestic flight operations back to Delhi Terminal.

Terminal T2 has been enhanced to 18 million passengers annually after the expansion project.

In a nutshell, DIAL’s plan is to merge Terminal 1D and Terminal 1C into a single Terminal 2 and bring back the flights from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1. They will then demolish T2 to raise Terminal 4 in its place. You can read all about the details here for the Delhi Airport expansion masterplan.

Bottomline

This would be very irritating for passenger again as well as the airlines to come up with a reorganisation. This especially is in wake of the fact that there is no through transfer for the bags offered by the no-frill airlines as my in-laws learnt the hard way. So, passengers who are bouncing around flights which are connections, but at different terminals, have to actually collect their bags and take it with them on the bus to the new terminal and check it in again. They definitely could have made it simpler from the Passenger Experience perspective.
