Delhi Airport to shut down Terminal 2 for renovations later in 2025

Terminal 2, the mothballed Terminal which comes to life and is shut as per the needs of the GMR Group and the Delhi Airport, will finally undergo an extensive renovation later this year, as Terminal 1, which opened after a rebuild in August 2024, is now “almost” ready for a complete cutover. Operations from Terminal 2 will be transitioned to T1 soon.

Terminal 2 renovation is coming up soon.

Delhi Airport intends to refurbish Terminal 2 in the next financial year (2025-26) and close it for four to six months, from April 2025 onwards. Then, flights will be moved to Terminal 1. This is good news, given that terminal 2 is experiencing significant decay, with the passenger crowd far higher than it could take, practically equalling the Delhi ISBT in density. The terminal was opened for operations four decades ago, in May 1986.

During the refurbishment, the airport will install six new aerobridges that can auto-dock with the aircraft. These new aerobridges will also have elevated ramps for wheelchair accessibility and swing doors for better operator safety. Significant upgrades to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and fire safety mechanisms will also be made. The interiors of the terminal are also planned to be upgraded.

The airport will also refurbish the airside and apron to address the infrastructure wear from four decades of service.

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, DIAL CEO, said on the occasion,

The refurbishment of the four-decade-old Terminal 2 is the need of the hour. We, at DIAL, are committed to enhancing the overall passenger experience by upgrading key infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, and elevating passenger comfort. These enhancements will be critical as we approach peak passenger capacity by 2025-26, driven by rapid growth in domestic air travel.

It is still unclear why Terminal 2 is being upgraded, while the Delhi Airport Masterplan envisions that Terminal 2 has to be razed down. Terminal 4 will take its place (for international operations) unless the airport operator figured the bones of the project were fine. They need to make upgrades to bring it to international standards.

Bottomline

Delhi Airport will transition operations from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 in Delhi in April 2025. Subsequently, Terminal 2 will be shut down to refurbish the terminal, which will last 4-6 months. The plans for the airport are not yet known.
