India’s busiest airport is in the middle of some much-needed repair work, but the timing will have a ripple effect on air travel through the peak summer and monsoon seasons. Delhi Airport (DEL), which operates four runways, has decided that it will shut Runway 10/28 from June 15 to September 15, 2025, which will lead to flight cancellations across airlines.
Delhi Airport Runway Closure for 10/28 Runway
Delhi Airport has four runways:
- 11R/29L
- 29R/11L
- 10/28
- 09/27

The closure is part of planned work on Runway 10/28, which is one of the four operational runways at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the repair work is part of scheduled maintenance and was pre-cleared by stakeholders, including the airlines and regulatory bodies. The runway will see the lights being increased from 650 metres to 900 metres. Also, the Instrument Landing System will be upgraded to CATIIIB, to ensure that in the winters, when the fog hits, the runway is operational.
Earlier on, in April 2025, work had started on the same upgrade, but with the coordination with airlines going for a toss, and the winds playing nasty, the runway had to be brought back into circulation within a month. There is not expected to be too much effect this time around, given it is the lean season and hence airlines expect that
How Many Flights Are Affected?
The CEO of Delhi Airport has put the cancellations at 56 departures per day, which means, combined between Arrivals and Departures, over 100 flights (about 112) will be affected. Further, about 80 flights have been retimed. The CEO has put the schedule affected as 7% of the schedule at the airport.
Passengers flying into or out of Delhi between June and early September 2025 should keep a close eye on their flight status and monitor airline communication channels for any rescheduling, especially on domestic routes, which are more frequency-driven.
Bottomline
Delhi Airport’s decision to shut one of its three runways for three months may be necessary for infrastructure upkeep, but it will create some disruptions for summer and monsoon travellers. With over 100 flights affected daily, passengers should anticipate schedule changes, arrive early, and check their email for updates if already booked, especially if they have connecting flights.
While airlines are reworking their schedules to minimise passenger inconvenience, the runway closure will undeniably strain capacity at India’s busiest airport. If you’re flying in or out of DEL this summer, keep those notifications turned on.
Have you heard from the airlines yet for any disruptions to your flights from or via DEL?
