Delhi Airports’ renovated Terminal 1 to be operational from August 17, 2024

Delhi Airport has had a large part of Terminal 1 under redevelopment since 2019 to redeploy it as an integrated terminal as part of Phase 3A of the Delhi Airport expansion plan. The terminal building was inaugurated in March 2024, but an unfortunate accident shut down the older wing. So, Terminal 1 has been closed since June 28, 2024.

Delhi Airport Terminal 1 to be operationalised effective August 17, 2024

Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport will reopen on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The part of T1 that will reopen on August 17 has been under construction since 2019 under DIAL’s Phase 3A expansion project. This section, located on the extreme right side of the terminal building, was inaugurated this year. The part of the terminal building that collapsed on June 28 is on the left and centre and will remain closed longer.

T1 has been closed since June 28 after a section of its roof collapsed amid heavy rains, resulting in one fatality and six injuries. Before its closure, T1 handled approximately 200 daily flights. These flights were temporarily shifted to Terminals 2 and 3. About 80 per cent of T1’s flights were operated by IndiGo, while the remaining were operated by SpiceJet.

The recently expanded terminal can handle up to 40 million passengers annually. Its closure increased pressure on two other terminals, from which domestic flights also operate. Delhi Airport handles about 1,240 daily flights.

SpiceJet will be the first to move to Terminal 1, with 13 flights to be transferred to Terminal 1 on August 17, 2024. IndiGo will move 34 flights from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 effective September 2, 2024. After these flights are shifted, Terminal 1 will operate at 25% of its pre-disaster capacity.

All passengers flying on SpiceJet flights at T1 must enter through entry gate A on the ground floor. Passengers taking IndiGo flights must enter T1 through entry gates 5 and 6 on the first floor. All passenger arrivals will take place through dedicated arrivals on the ground floor.

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, said that operations at T1 will significantly ease pressure on T2 and T3. His statement read,

Delhi Airport is glad to announce the operationalization of new Terminal 1 from August 17, 2024. The state-of-the-art Terminal 1 will significantly boost our capacity, easing pressure on Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers can expect a smoother travel experience with improved amenities and advanced technology.

DIAL has introduced a Mobile Check-in Service, which allows passengers to bypass long queues at check-in counters. Other facilities include an Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), an Individual Carrier System (ICS), and Self-Baggage Drop (SBD) kiosks. Passengers can also enjoy an expanded Shop and Dine area, a prayer room, a yoga zone, quiet spaces, and other amenities to enhance comfort and convenience.

Bottomline

Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1, which has been under redevelopment since 2019, will be opened to airlines and the public effective August 17, 2024. SpiceJet will transition flights to Terminal 1 on August 17, 2024, and IndiGo will transition flights on September 2, 2024. The older part of the terminal, which witnessed an accident and a roof collapse and has been shut since June 28, 2024, continues to be closed for now.

What impact do you think opening up the redeveloped Terminal 1 at Delhi Airport will have on capacity?

  1. is there any update on connection road/metro between T1 and T3? earlier, it used to take anywhere between 30 mins to 60 mins to travel between these 2 terminals by bus/taxi.
