  • American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card: 3X Points (1X Basic/INR 50 + 2X Bonus)
  • American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card: 3X Points (1X Basic/INR 50 + 2X Bonus)
  • American Express Gold Card: 5X Points (1X Basic/INR 50 + 4X Bonus)

How does the American Express Rewards Multiplier Work?

American Express is offering 20 Membership Rewards points on all cards which are offering the Reward Multiplier feature for orders placed between October 22 – November 4, 2021. This is a significant hike for the lower end American Express Cards for sure.

During this promotional period, Reward Multiplier offers of earning 5X Membership Rewards points on American Express Platinum Card, 3X Membership Rewards points on American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card and American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card and 2X Membership Rewards points on other American Express Proprietary Cards will not be applicable. Cardmember will instead get a higher accelerated earn of 20 Membership Rewards Points on every spend of INR 100 via the Rewards Multiplier on select brands. These include:

Unlike the last promotion in July 2021, the e-vouchers sale will not attract 20 points/INR 100 spent.

Bottomline

This is a pretty lucrative offer if you believe in the power of Membership Rewards points as I do. For cardmembers of the American Express Gold Charge Card, American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card and other such cards, it benefits them even more given instead of 4 points/INR 100 they will now earn 20 points/INR 100 spent. So go on and shop over and make the most of this promotion.

What do you think of the new Reward Multiplier promotion from American Express?

  1. @Ajay, I was recently following up with Amex to check regarding fulfilment of a few offers they rolled out in the last one year where the requisite points were not posted to my account. To my surprise (and utter disbelief I must say) I discovered that Amex doesn’t consider your overall spend amount for meeting the spend threshold (for the offers/promotions they roll out). For instance, if the Amex offer was to get a certain benefit (say 10K bonus MR points) on spending 50K within a specific duration – and if you spend 52K on say Amazon to buy something – you would presume that you have met the offer condition and hence you should get the 10K bonus MR points after the 120 odd days – but you wont get them as Amex excludes the inbuilt GST component in that purchase (assume its 5%) – which comes close to 3K – from the spend amount – so the net ‘post-GST’ amount would be reduced to 49K and hence as per them the offer condition was not fulfilled!!!!!!!!!!

This GST component is not visible to a consumer while making a purchase on any of the popular eComm portals – Amazon, Flipkart, AJIO, Myntra etc. – one can however see it if you download the invoice and check therein.

Strangely only Amex follows this practice; I have seen HDFC and Axis fulfilling their end of the deal in such scenarios. Not heard of any other bank following this practice. For something which attracts the highest GST slab, one may need to end up purchasing for an amount in excess of 20-30% to meet the spend threshold in case of Amex.

I strongly feel Amex is acting in bad faith here. Anyways this issue is still being discussed within the Amex leadership (as I have escalated it) so will let you know of the outcome.

Have you had any experience with Amex on this sort of situation?

  2. @ Ajay
Will we get bonus points for mobile purchase also? In Terms and condition it is mentioned that all mobiles excluded in Flipkart and most of mobiles in Amazon also.

  3. Hi Ajay, would you know how does the 5X reward points accrual work for plat cards in booking a marriott property through the reward multiplier site? Asking this because the card is not charged while booking on marriott and is used to only hold the booking. I could not find an option to pay while booking, so that the card is charged online then itself. Thank in advance if you can clarify this please.

    • @Amit, apparently it comes, eventually (6-7 months later that is). Someone else confirmed that. I have just made my first booking with this and if it works I can tell you mid next year myself!
