In July 2023, Cathay Pacific announced a significant devaluation of their award chart, which will be live on October 1, 2023. The date is near, so time for a reminder.
Cathay’s award chart to devalue on October 1, 2023
Cathay Pacific will be moving on to a new award chart, which as per them, is “delivering new value.” However, it will be a devaluation, where premium awards will cost 20-30% more on October 1 and onwards compared to today. Read about it here.
For reference, here is the current award chart for AsiaMiles redemption on Cathay Pacific only.
Come October 1, 2023, this is how this award chart will look like. Note that Short Distance awards are now split into Type 1 and Type 2.
Here is the Multi-carrier award chart as of today, for flight distance up to 50,000 miles using Cathay’s Asia Miles. In the case of Multi-carrier awards, you can redeem:
- Two oneworld alliance airlines, which Cathay Pacific is not one of your selected carriers; or
- Three or more oneworld alliance airlines, which Cathay Pacific is one of your selected carriers.
On October 1, 2023, this chart also goes up in terms of the number of Asia Miles required.
From an Indian perspective, the following cards allow for transfers to Cathay’s Asia Miles:
- Citi Prestige: 1 Point = 4 AsiaMiles
- Citi PremierMiles: 2 PremierMiles = 1 AsiaMile
- American Express Membership Rewards: 2 MR = 1 AsiaMile
If you have any AsiaMiles left, you should redeem them before October 1, 2023, as before this date, tickets issued will still be with the old award rates.
Bottomline
Cathay’s AsiaMiles award devaluations will come into effect on October 1, and Cathay Pacific notified these changes in July 2023. The new award chart will increase the miles required on various award charts of Cathay Pacific, so you would do well to lock in your award bookings by September 30, 2023.
