British Airways’ half off on redemptions sale

British Airways has launched a new sale yesterday, where they are offering a massive discount of 50% of the number of Avios required to travel to or from London Heathrow or Gatwick to their 90 Long Haul destinations across the globe. That could mean a pretty saving on British Airways redemption with Avios.

The only catch, it is valid for economy class redemptions only! And their humongous taxes and surcharges are still to be paid. You can also fly through London to the other side of the globe as well. For instance, here is a flight between Mumbai and New York only at 14600 Avios one way.

The promotion is available for bookings made from now to December 17 for travel between January 4 and June 30, 2018. Discounts on this sale include flights all over the place, such as New York, Toronto and Dubai for 13,000 Avios and Hong Kong and Shanghai for 19,500 Avios. The list prices are 26,000 Avios and 39,000 Avios respectively. Of course, the airline taxes, fees and carrier charges apply 100% on these redemptions.

The promotion applies to peak as well as off-peak seasons. The only places you can’t head to are some segments such as over to Sydney, Santiago de Chile, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janiero, Buenos Aires, San Jose (Costa Rica) and Grenada.

This is great on paper, but if you think you want to pay those huge fuel surcharges. Otherwise, there is a great promotion in December to earn double Avios, and you’d make more Avios by spending a similar amount of money in Economy Id’ imagine.

The great news is that award availability is good and the period is long, so if you think you’d want some redemption tickets for the first half of 2018, this is the time to go for those tickets.

Remember, you can transfer Avios from American Express, Diners Club and Citibank. So those are some places to make whole if you’d like some points for your next British Airways redemption.

Bottomline

This is a good deal on the side of using your Avios, but unfortunately, there is no cash discount around here. Economy Class may or may not be the best use of Avios you see.

Let us know if you make a redemption under this promotion…

  1. Great promo.

Through June, wide open, 6500 miles plus $178 from US to LHR.

BA redemptions from London to Europe are easy. Usually 4500 miles or less with $20 fees.

  2. BA is notorious for high charges\taxes so I’m wondering whether there is any benefit in targetting avios points \miles? Also with Jet af\klm tie up shouldn’t JPM become much more valuable? Appreciate any guidance on which is \ are the best miles programmes to target.
