Breaking: British Airways Executive Club revamping earning structure for tier points & Avios

This just in. As a Gold member of the British Airways Executive Club, I do send a chunk of my business their way on my business travel. Reader Deovrat alerted me to some changes they are going to be making to the structure of the Executive Club for bookings made from April 28, 2015 onwards. Tickets booked before April 28, 2015 will earn Avios at the old rates.

Earning Changes: On a first look, it looks like BA is going the way of awarding more miles to higher fares, and snipping it from the lower & deep discounted economy tickets. Overall, a positive change for people booking closer to date of departure and by deduction higher fares.

Minimum amount of Avios being changed as well: On the same principle above, higher fares get more minimum miles and cheaper fares get lesser minimum miles, all the way to 125 as compared to 500 earlier.

Tier Bonus changes: Silver members see their bonuses going down from 100% to 50%, which is creating more differentiation between Silver & Gold now, apart from the airport perks offered to various tiers.

Tier Point changes: From the BA website:

In line with other adjustments, the lowest priced economy seats (in fare classes Q, O and G) will collect 25% of Tier Points rather than 50%.

London City to New York JFK service

Members flying on our business class only service from London City to New York JFK will collect Avios and Tier Points at the business class rate instead of the first class rate as currently applies, which will bring our London City services into line with Heathrow and Gatwick. Combined with the changes to Avios rates described above, this will still result in a net increase to the amount of Avios you can collect on this service.

My assessment: Another move to award more expensive fares over deep discounted fares. The party is over for mileage running I guess.

I’ll shortly put out the burning changes as well.
