One of the ways to use your air miles is to burn them for premium cabin award redemptions. However, where your miles can get you to differ from frequent flyer program to program. From the Star Alliance pack, Avianca’s LifeMiles can offer amazing value on bookings, largely because of their policy not to charge fuel surcharge and booking tickets almost all of them online. You can either earn miles by flying or buy miles outright. While others are offering Black Friday airline deals, Avianca is offering an exclusive LifeMiles deal for all our BoardingArea and Live From A Lounge readers. And it is a heck of a good deal.
We already wrote about how LifeMiles is offering a 140% bonus on miles purchases for Cyber Week. This means you can fly First Class or Business Class for at least a 65% off. But now we are making it even better!
BoardingArea and LiveFromALounge readers will enjoy an additional 5% bonus on top of the sale, bringing the bonus to 145% in total. This brings the cost to INR 0.96 (1.347 US cents) per mile, which is one of the lowest prices I’ve ever seen. The price quoted is ex-taxes since taxes vary per country. No taxes in India, for instance.
Register for LiveFromALounge’s 145% bonus here
The minimum purchase for this promotion is 1,000 miles, while on the open promotion you need to buy over a 100K miles to get the 140% bonus. So you can buy the miles for a future redemption, or you can use them to top up your account if you are a few thousand miles shy.
Registration for the promotion is open from today (November 22) 13:30 IST / 3 EST through the end of the promotion. You will be able to make a purchase 24 hours after registration, so you can purchase between November 23 11:30 IST/ 1 AM EST through November 27 11:29 IST/ 00:59 EST.
So head to this page and enter your LifeMiles number. You get an email confirmation from LifeMiles within 24 hours telling you that your promotion is ready to roll. From there, you can log into your account and see the 145% bonus on your account when you buy miles.
I’d highly recommend registering now, and then you can decide if you want to take advantage of the promotion.
Remember, you can purchase a maximum of 200,000 LifeMiles before bonuses every calendar year. Which means if you haven’t bought at all this year, you get to stockpile on 490,000 LifeMiles when you buy 200K. The full T&C of the promotion is here.
Discounted LifeMiles awards
Apart from the Black Friday sale, LifeMiles also announced a discounted Star Alliance awards. There are some very nice First Class experiences there as well.
Here’s the full list of discounted city pairs. You can find the full LifeMiles Star Alliance award chart here.
Since LifeMiles transactions are processed in USD, you can use a card that gets you international spend bonus. For instance, Jet Airways ICICI Bank Sapphiro Visa currently has a 2X international spend bonus going. You could use Citi Prestige as well, or the American Express Platinum Charge Card which now offers 3X Membership Rewards on spends abroad. Diners Black won’t get the 10X here because terms state it needs to be a swipe.
LifeMiles purchases are coded as an airline purchase, so you can also use your Citi PremierMiles to get 10X rewards.
Conclusion
Remember, when using LifeMiles, you won’t be able to access Singapore Airlines premium award space. Also, LifeMiles expire within 12 months unless you keep any activity in your account. In my case, I credit all my Air India flights to LifeMiles.
So, what are you waiting for, Sign up and Buy if you please!
Thanks for flagging this deal. Its incredible. Just booked $4800 business class ticket for $2200 using the miles. What a steal!
I would also thank you if you could share the libk of pricing chart, so that we can get an estimate of how many points we need to buy.
Thanks
@Aman the link is in the post already.
Ajay, how do you credit Air India flights to Lifemiles: do you do it at the counter or file a retrospective claim with Lifemiles? Because there is no option to select Lifemiles as the FF program when you try to do it online?
@Nikhil I put in my Avianca number at check-in
Hi,
I am not yet member of lifemiles, does this promotion still apply for me?
The terms says that this promotion is directed promotion and only those who have received the email from lifemiles can apply and purchase?
Whats the best use of miles for travel from India to Australia?
@Ravish ignore the part about email received. that is boilerplate language. Sign up, register, and then wait and see if one day later you get the extra bonus. If you do, buy. Else don’t. India to Australia should be easy with Air India operating direct flights
Dear Ajay,
The cost of the miles would out to a little less then Re 1.00 Could you assist me with the savings in money for flight from Mumbai because the effective cost was working higher then money which can be spent on purchasing the tickets. Please assist to correct my understanding/ misunderstanding
