After 2019, for the first time, American Express announced a new transfer bonus, and this is with the same partner they went with in 2019. Amex and Marriott Bonvoy have come together to offer a new Amex to Marriott Transfer Bonus to the Indian card members of American Express. The promotion, which kicks off on September 1, 2022, is offering a straight 30% bonus on transferring your Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy, with the bonus points being received in your Marriott Bonvoy account by January 31, 2023.
The normal transfer ratio between American Express Membership Rewards points and Marriott Bonvoy points is 1 MR = 1 Marriott Bonvoy Point, so for this promotion, you get 1.3 Marriott Bonvoy points with your Membership Rewards transfer.
The following cards offer the ability to transfer points to Marriott Bonvoy:
- Personal Cards
- The American Express Centurion Card
- The American Express Platinum Card
- American Express Gold Card
- American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card
- The American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card
- American Express Smart Earn Credit Card
- The American Express Membership Reward Credit Card
How to transfer Membership Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy?
You would first need to register your Marriott Bonvoy Account with Membership Rewards before you make the transfer go through. If you have already made a transfer in the past, you don’t have to add your number again. If you don’t have a Marriott Bonvoy membership, join now. The points usually show up instantaneously. However, it might take up to 48 hours sometimes.
Amex to Marriott Transfer Bonus Terms & Conditions
Membership Rewards point transfers must be made in increments of 100 points. At the regular redemption rate, 1,000 Membership Rewards Points = 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points. From 12:00:00 am IST on September 01, 2022, until 11:59:59 IST on October 31, 2022, when you transfer Membership Rewards Points to Marriott Bonvoy, you will receive 30% more Marriott Bonvoy Points on the total number of Membership Rewards points transferred. For example, if you move 1,000 Membership Rewards Points to Marriott Bonvoy, you will be credited a total of 1,300 Marriott Bonvoy Points.
A maximum of 900,000 Membership Rewards Points per account can be transferred per calendar year (January to December). Remember, once you transfer out the points to Marriott Bonvoy, you can’t move them back into your Membership Rewards account under any circumstances. The bonus points will be added to your account instantaneously as well.
Should you transfer?
The Amex to Marriott Transfer Bonus is not their most lucrative one, but perhaps one of the best ones you will receive in the coming days. American Express has announced a dozen or so transfer bonuses in the US launched today and varying amounts in other markets, but in India, this is the only one on offer. One could extend this rationale to state that there might be more offers coming soon if American Express sees a good response to this one. So, if you don’t really need the transfer at the moment, I’d advise you to hold on till mid-October 2023 to decide on the transfer.
What good are Marriott Bonvoy points?
Marriott Bonvoy points are good for stays in many Marriott properties, aspirational, and in the city as well. I wrote a significant analysis of how you could use your American Express points to Marriott Bonvoy for travel. However, with the now live Marriott Bonvoy dynamic pricing, the opportunities may change depending on the time of the year you want to go where you want to go.
One way to get more value out of your Marriott points is by taking advantage of the 5th night free on award stays.
Bottomline
This is a great promotion, and if you have plans to stay at a Marriott hotel in the coming months, perhaps it makes sense to transfer some Membership Rewards points over to Marriott now. I will certainly be partaking in this promotion as well, but only in October 2022, as I mentioned earlier, and I will report back with my experience when I can.

If we make 3 transfers before 31st October, would we get the 30% bonus for all 3 transfers?
If a new Amex customer signs up – gets the 100k points and transfers before 31st oct – would these new customers be eligible for the bonus?
@Nishank, you are assuming that Amex will return to issuing cards ASAP. And that the bonuses will be the same as pre-embargo.
Amex has started issuing new cards as RBI ban is just lifted.
@R, Even I am aware that the ban was lifted. But where are the new card applications being taken?
Hi Ajay, I called customer care three days back; they arranged a callback and took the application for a membership rewards card yesterday (their executive came home in Bangalore and got the details).
Hi Ajay,
I had received this mail from AmEx few days ago and tried transferring around 12k points to check this.
Interestingly even the bonus points got credited immediately into my Bonvoy account without having to wait for them to get separately credited which was great.
This is one of the best promotions which give real value.
I’m only seeing a 1.2x value, not the 1.3x mentioned in the article
Can I transfer from multiple Amex CC to a single Marriott account?
@Nitin, yes. As long as the card issued and the Marriott Bonvoy account is in the same name.
Thanks, Ajay for the update. I have 800k points, but not using this promotion as I don’t find lucrative, especially after the Axis edge transfer ratio of 5:4. Amex lost their USP on Marriott transfer and I diverted my spending to Axis.
Hi Ajay,
Yes even I had received this offer in my email this evening and I immediately chose to transfer 12k MR points from my account to my Bonvoy account.
The interesting thing to note here is that not only did the points transfer happen immediately, but even the bonus points of 3600 got added as well without waiting for them to get credited !
This is absolutely a superb deal.
Currently Marriott is offering a 25% bonus when we purchase a minimum of 2000 points.
But it seems this deal is much much sweeter.
@Ashish, Thanks for the update.
