The American Express Platinum Travel Card is a one of a kind product for those who like to spend on travel. A mid-tier card, it offers you tonnes of benefits for the price you pay for it. You earn Membership Rewards points for all your spends at the rate of 1 Membership Rewards Point for every INR 50 spent with a few exceptions.

On top of that, you get travel vouchers worth INR 29,500 during the membership year:

• INR 7,700 voucher on spending INR 1,90,000
• INR 11,800 on spending INR 4,00,000
• Taj Vouchers worth INR 10,000 on spending INR 4,00,000

The vouchers used to be an option between SpiceJet vouchers or Amex Travel vouchers and could be used for domestic travel and hotel bookings. So, on INR 4 Lakh spends, you get INR 29,500 worth of vouchers, which makes it a 7% return. You also get four complimentary visits per year to 11 lounges across India per annum. American Express had discontinued the issuance of SpiceJet vouchers for American Express Platinum Travel Card from August 1, 2020.

 

As a replacement, however, American Express has started issuing Flipkart vouchers for those holding the card till December 31, 2020. This option went live on August 20, 2020, and is valid on the milestone spends of INR 1.9 lakhs and INR 4 lakhs only, and not on the conversion of regular points on this card.

That means, the 7,500 bonus points credited on your account for the spending of INR 1.9 Lakhs is now going to give you the option of redeeming for INR 5,000 worth of Domestic Travel vouchers on AmexTravel’s India website, or a similar value on Flipkart too.

That means, the 10,000 bonus points credited on your account for the spending of INR 4 Lakhs is similarly going to give you the option of redeeming for INR 8,000 worth of Domestic Travel vouchers on AmexTravel’s India website, or on Flipkart too.

Arguably this is a travel card, but I feel with reduced travel in 2020 for everyone and SG being on a shaky wicket, this is an excellent move from American Express to replace the SpiceJet vouchers option with Flipkart vouchers.

Bottomline

If you hold the American Express Platinum Travel Card, you now have a new redemption option in terms of Flipkart vouchers for the rest of 2020. And if you don’t have the American Express Platinum Travel Card, there has never been a better time to get it for the first year free.
