When it comes to spend-based offers, one of the chief proponents in the market is American Express. As India heads into the holiday season, American Express has already rolled out spend based offers of many kinds last months. We usually don’t write about them because these are targetted. However, this time around, the spend-based offers seem to have been rolled out to a wide base of American Express card members. Yesterday, I wrote about one such spend-based offer which was rolled out to many members, but only for travel-based spending.
American Express Travel Spending offers includes 3X Membership Rewards points.
As a part of the Spend-based offer rolled out on December 3, 2021, not only are there vouchers on offer, but a small detail also says that 3X points are on offer.
As a recap, the offers rolled out by American Express are targetted at the following cardmembers:
- American Express Platinum Card
- American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card
- American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card
- American Express Gold Card

Various permutations have been rolled out, and you will receive one of the following offers on most cards:

In the promotion, you can only spend on Travel, Lodging & Transportation industries spends to count under this cashback. Here is a small detail that is easy to miss.
The offer is applicable for only select American Express Cardmembers. A Cardmember is eligible for this offer only if they have received an offer communication directly from American Express through any of its channels. Supplementary cardmember spending will also be counted towards the spending made by the primary cardmember.
As a reminder, American Express offers the following points on their various cards issued in India on a normal basis:
- American Express Platinum Card (2.5 MR points/INR 100 base + 5 MR Points/INR 100 bonus)
- American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card (2 MR points/INR 100 base)
- American Express Platinum Travel Credit Card (2 MR points/INR 100 base)
- American Express Gold Card (2 MR points/INR 100 base)
- American Express Membership Rewards Credit Card (2 MR points/INR 100 base)
- American Express SmartEarn Credit Card (2 MR points/INR 100 base)
The interesting part in the T&C is how overseas spend is defined. It says,
How I am inferring this is that, any international spend, even online, will count towards earning these 3X bonus points. The Bonus Membership Rewards points for overseas spend will be credited before 15 May 2022.
Bottomline
American Express has rolled out its holiday promotions for the season and offers 3X bonus points with a bonus upto 5000 Membership Rewards points. You should have received an email communication with your customised offer from American Express, and make sure to enrol before you start spending.
What do you make of the 3X Bonus points offer on international spending from American Express?
