Akasa discloses order of another 150 Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft

Akasa Air, which launched in 2022 and quickly grossed over 4% of the market share, currently operates 22 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The airline made its first aircraft order at the Dubai Airshow 2021 for 72 Boeing 737 -8 and -8-200 aircraft and later added four more aircraft to make it 76 on order.

Akasa discloses the order of another 150 737 MAX aircraft.

Akasa’s CEO and Founder, Vinay Dube, had teased in mid-2023 about an upcoming order “in triple digits” for the airline. Many, including yours truly, believed this order would be announced at the Dubai Airshow 2023. However, the show came and went, and there was no further news of this order being signed. However, at the ongoing Wings India 2024 event in Hyderabad, Akasa’s order was announced as a headline item. The order was finalised in December 2023 but was previously undisclosed, even at Boeing’s end.

Akasa’s latest order will comprise 737 MAX 10 and 737 MAX 8-200 jets, providing the airline a steady aircraft delivery stream through 2032. Akasa, for reference, currently operates 22 737 MAX aircraft and will have 25 aircraft by March 2023. The airline’s first aircraft order will keep the pipeline of aircraft supply till 2027, and this latest order will commence subsequently. Akasa will receive a total of 204 aircraft from now on through 2032.

Speaking from the WINGS 2024 airshow at Hyderabad, Vinay Dube, Founder and CEO of Akasa Air, said,

This large and historic aircraft order puts Akasa on a path of becoming one of the top 30 leading airlines in the world, by the turn of this decade. Akasa’s remarkable growth testifies the sheer promise that India holds as an aviation market, and we are thrilled to be a part of this journey.

These additions to our fleet will help us bolster the strength of our operations as we expand our footprint and foray into international skies in the very near future.

The airline’s order book here comprises 737-8-200, which is configured in a dense capacity, and the 737-10 will also be able to seat up to 230 passengers. The 737-10 is the most extended variant of the 737 MAX family, like the A321neo, an extended version of the A320neo fuselage. There is no indication that any purchase rights and options are included, and this looks like a firm order for the entire 150 aircraft.

Bottomline

Akasa has ordered another 150 737 MAX aircraft, comprising the 737-8-200 and 737-10 jets, securing its aircraft supply through 2032. The airline already operates a fleet of 22 aircraft and will take up another 204 aircraft from Boeing over the next eight years.

What do you think of the order from Akasa? Enough to fuel competition with the Tata Group and IndiGo?
