Akasa all set to order up to 150 Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft

Akasa Air, which launched in 2022 and quickly grossed over 4% of the market share, currently operates over 20 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The airline made its first aircraft order at the Dubai Airshow 2021 for 72 Boeing 737 -8 and -8-200 aircraft and later added four more aircraft to make it 76 on order.

Akasa is all set to order another batch of 737 MAX aircraft.

Akasa’s CEO and Founder, Vinay Dube, had teased in mid-2023 about an upcoming order “in triple digits” for the airline. Many, including yours truly, believed this order would be announced at the Dubai Airshow 2023. However, the show came and went, and there was no further news of this order being signed.

However, Reuters now reports that the order is nearing finalisation, and it might be signed at the Wings India 2024 event, which will be held in Hyderabad in the second half of January 2024. As per the report, an order for around 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft could be in play. The report is unclear if this includes future purchase options, frequently used to showcase higher than “firm order” numbers, or if these are fully-baked “firm” orders. The current order for Akasa is supposed to be delivered by 2027, so the new order should hope to build on that and be available for aircraft to be delivered in late 2027 or early 2028 onwards.

Bottomline

Akasa might order their next set of aircraft, approximately 150 in number, with Boeing in January 2024. The order is expected to be announced at the Wings India 2024 event at Begumpet, Hyderabad.

What do you think of the upcoming order from Akasa? Enough to fuel competition with the Tata Group and IndiGo?
