Air India’s new 787-9 and refurbished 787-8 to take on London Heathrow routes in Summer 2026

Air India just inducted its first Boeing 787-9 in the Air India Skin, and the aircraft is now flying between Mumbai and Frankfurt. The airline has at least three more Boeing 787-9 aircraft that are expected to join the fleet, apart from the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which are undergoing retrofits, and 2 are expected to join back within the month of February 2026 itself

Air India plans to operate the 787-8/787-9 aircraft to Canada and London Heathrow.

While Air India has not officially announced it, filings have been made in the schedule for Northern Summer 2026, which were picked up by AeroRoutes, which tracks such changes. The changes indicate that the new Boeing 787-9s will head on the following routes in the coming months.

The tail features a colorful design. The sky is clear and blue, and there are some airport personnel and equipment visible in the background.

The airline will operate the brand-new 787-9 on flights between Delhi and London Heathrow for three months, from May to June 2026, on the rotation AI2015 / AI2016, which is currently operated with a Vistara Boeing 787-9.

From August 2026, by which time the airline will presumably receive one more Boeing 787-9, it will use two 787-9s to operate 10 weekly flights between Delhi and Toronto, via Vienna on the outbound flight.

Air India to induct the Boeing 787-8 (refurbished) to Europe

With the yet-to-be inducted Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which were taken out for retrofit and are yet to return to flying duties, the airline plans to send them to London Heathrow. The airline will use two 787-8 aircraft to get the Delhi / Bangalore / Mumbai markets exposed to the retrofit 787-8.

Bottomline

Air India’s 787-8/9 aircraft will soon start flying through Canada and the UK as the airline harmonises flights with the new product in these markets. This will result in some 777s getting freed up, with which other routes are intended to be upgraded as well.
