Earlier this week, Air India and Emirates, apart from many other airlines, found themselves cancelling flight operations to the USA because of the rollout of 5G services across the country. I wrote about the issues faced by these airlines in-depth in a separate post.
Air India resumes US operations
Air India has now said it has resumed six India-US flights, which use the Boeing 777 aircraft after Boeing gave them clearance to operate these aircraft. Overnight, essentially, the FAA has been working on clearing more affected equipment and has given the ability of certain 777 aircraft fitted with this cleared equipment to fly into the US.
Boeing has cleared AI to operate in USA on B777. Accordingly,first flight has left this morning to JFK. Other flights leaving in the day are to Chicago & SFO Arrangements to carry stranded pax are being worked out. Matter regarding B777 flying into USA has been sorted: Air India

Air India had cancelled eight flights on India-US routes due to the deployment of C Band 5G in the US which could interfere with the aircraft’s radio altimeters.
On January 20, 2022, Air India is now operating three relief flights, one each to Chicago, New York JFK and San Francisco, to take the displaced passengers over to the USA.
- AI101D to JFK
- AI127D to ORD
- AI173D to SFO
The Air India flights that have resumed operations are Delhi – New York JFK, New York JFK – Delhi, Delhi – Chicago, Chicago-Delhi, Delhi – San Francisco and San Francisco – Delhi. The Mumbai Newark operations will most likely be moved to a 787, but I haven’t heard on this yet.
Emirates will resume operations on January 21, 2022
Emirates says that they will enable the resumption of their full flight schedule across the United States by 21 January 2022 after the temporary suspension of flights to many US destinations earlier in the week after FAA and Boeing issued formal notifications that lifted previous restrictions on aircraft operations.
Emirates will resume flight operations to the following US destinations starting from 21 January 2022:
- Chicago (EK 235)
- Orlando (EK 219)
- Miami (EK 213)
- Dallas Fort Worth (EK 221)
- Seattle (EK 229)
- Newark (EK 209)
Emirates will resume operations to the following US destinations starting from 22 January 2022:
- Houston (EK 211)
- San Francisco (EK 225)
- Boston (EK 237)
Emirates flights to New York JFK, Los Angeles (LAX) and Washington DC (IAD) continue to operate as scheduled.
