Air India Premium Economy: Where can you fly it on their A320neos [as of August 2024]

Air India has had plans to introduce Premium Economy for a long time, which has been in the public domain since the news of the Vistara merger came out. The airline introduced Premium Economy on some of the 777s it took over from Delta and then had the A350 aircraft, which also had Premium Economy.

In terms of domestic operations, Air India intended to launch Premium Economy, given its merger with Vistara and the success Vistara has seen with Premium Economy over time. However, it initially took a lot of A320neo aircraft in the standard configuration and the old livery, intending to reconfigure them to the 3-cabin configuration later.

The airline took the first A320neo in the new livery in VT-RTN and had it kitted up in the new 3-cabin configuration with Eight Business Class Seats, 24 Premium Economy Class and 132 Economy Class Seats.

Now, it has been going through the process of kitting out more of its aircraft with the 3-cabin configuration. As of August 12, 2024, the airline now has six A320neo aircraft configured in the 3-cabin setup. These are:

  • VT-RTZ
  •  VT-RTW
  •  VT-RTN
  •  VT-RTM
  •  VT-RTL
  •  VT-RIO

The airline is expanding the retrofit programme and intends to add the third cabin to at least 35 more A320neo aircraft by mid-2025, which would mean we should see the premium economy cabin on a lot more routes in the coming times.

I’ve tried the A320neo in Premium Economy Class a few times, and I’ll write about my experience with them soon. But in the meantime, I will try to keep this list updated when I can. You can book your ticket on the Air India website.

Bottomline

Air India has been quickly ramping up the retrofit of the A320neo fleet to add a three-cabin setup to these aircraft. Six Aircraft already have the Premium Economy Cabin as of August 12, 2024, and the airline has expanded the range of routes you can get to sample the new Domestic Premium Economy of Air India.

Have you flown the Air India A320neo on the three-cabin setup yet? What has been your experience with them?

  1. In one of your pictures, the premium and economy sections are separated by curtains. If you sit in the first row of economy, the curtains dangle in your face. The space for that particular seat is designed horribly wrong. It makes you wonder how one could do such a shoddy job, release it for consumption.

So far, all I can say as a Star Alliance Gold member is that AI is down a path where it might be impossible to recover. In fact, they should change the name to Air Tata to avoid spoiling the name of India.
