Air India planning free wifi on planes

I’ve heard enough number of times that Air India wants to also provide wifi on their planes to their passengers. Till so far, we know that they considered BSNL to install wifi on their planes, a company which to my knowledge has no working knowledge of wifi in the air. Jet Airways has already installed an in-flight IFE beaming system on a lot of their planes, and plans wifi, for which they already held a pricing study.

Air India hasn’t given up hope yet, however. They are stating publicly, that they are going to launch the service on their domestic workhorse, the Airbus A320 in June or July 2017. Per this report:

We are working on having Wi-Fi on our planes. We have issued expression of interest and will take the aircraft manufacturer’s nod to install Wi-Fi equipment. Though giving an exact date is difficult, we are aiming to start this by June or July

Air India has not specified what kind of data service will it offer, but it does state the service will be free to start. It seems they are confident that they will be the first, which means, the government might hold on to the approvals for other carriers till Air India gets the credit to boast about being first on this.

Let’s see how far this goes as gossip, or real truth.

Do you think Air India will be the first Indian carrier to offer wifi on their planes?
