Just last month, Air India made a discount offer where you could spend 40% less Air India Flying Returns miles to travel across the Air India network. This came a few months after the inflation of the award chart back in December 2015.
The next discount sale was to come soon, and it has just been announced that the new sale is live.
From today onwards, for travel dates between July 11, 2016 to September 28, 2016 you can redeem flights on Air India network (domestic and international), for a 40% discount on the number of miles required, as long as you are travelling on a weekday (Monday – Thursday). This promotion makes travel very cheap on miles in case you are able to make plans to travel on a weekday. Here are some illustrations Air India shares:
The discount is valid on all classes of travel, and makes it easy to redeem for premium cabins at a large discount. For instance, a SFO-BOM first class which usually goes for 200K miles one way between SFO-BOM, is now available at 120K Air India miles.
And closer home, for instance, BOM-GOI and v.v. tickets are going for a steal at 3300 miles one way.
Since the new redemption structure was put in place, there is no requirement to pay fuel surcharges, and all you are supposed to pay is airport taxes and other charges. This works well for international flights, considering domestic flyers were already not paying fuel surcharge on redemption tickets.
You can only redeem these points on AI flights, and not on codeshares or other partner airlines for Star Alliance flights. Additionally, the discount is valid only for travel between July 11, 2016 to September 28, 2016 for travel on Monday – Thursday. Tickets have become as cheap as 3,000 Air India Flying Returns miles.
As a reminder, Air India is a partner with a lot of credit card partners (Amex, HDFC Bank, Kotak, Citi and SBI Cards) apart from co-branded credit cards and flying partners.
Bottomline
This is a great promotion from Air India and if you can make it work for yourself or your family, you should.
