Is Air India planning expansion out of London Gatwick?

Air India has worked overtime towards fixing its International network to maximise revenue while it can. About a year ago, Air India transitioned flights from non-metro airports in India to London Gatwick. Flights from Amritsar, Goa, Ahmedabad and Kochi were transitioned from London Heathrow to London Gatwick.

Air India now plans expansion out of London Gatwick.

Currently, Air India operates the following flights to and from London:

  • Delhi: Twice Daily and One flight thrice a week to London Heathrow
  • Mumbai: Twice Daily to London Heathrow
  • Amritsar: Thrice a week to London Gatwick
  • Goa Mopa: Thrice a week to London Gatwick
  • Cochin: Thrice a week to London Gatwick
  • Ahmedabad: Thrice a week to London Gatwick

Air India is now reportedly planning expansion out of London Gatwick. As per SeanM1997 on Twitter, Air India is planning a new flight between Bengaluru and London Gatwick, to be launched effective April 1, 2024. The airline will deploy a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft with five weekly flights to serve the BLR-LGW sector.

Here is the planned schedule,

AI177 BLR 14:05-20:05 LGW
AI178 LGW 21:35-11:50 (+1) BLR

The flights will operate on all weekdays except Thursday and Saturday. It is imperative to note that even pre-privatisation, Bengaluru – London was a city pair offered by Air India, except it was between Bengaluru and London Heathrow in 2018. The flight numbers assigned to the BLR – LGW flights are the same as the BLR – LHR rotation back in the day. The route is still not announced formally by Air India and is not open for reservation on the Air India website. Air India also might add a Delhi – London Gatwick rotation later in the year.

Bottomline

Air India plans to grow at London Gatwick and will start with a new flight between Bengaluru and London Gatwick in April 2024. The airline operated flights between Bengaluru and London Heathrow back in the day, and the same flight numbers will be transferred to this flight. Later in the year, a Delhi to London Gatwick flight might also be launched.

What do you think of Air India’s planning to launch more flights to London Gatwick?
