oneworld to welcome Aer Lingus soon

One of the developments in the aviation industry last night was the approval for sale of the Irish government’s 25% stake in Aer Lingus to IAG (International Airlines Group), the company that owns British Airways, Iberia and Vueling. With this transaction coming through, Aer Lingus will still be operating as an independent entity, and hold its existing slots at London Heathrow. You can read details here [PDF].

The best part for frequent flyers? Air Lingus will join the oneworld alliance in the coming days. Though there is no timeline prescribed, but this will be interesting from a connections perspective, and flying to Ireland will become that much easier! Also, there will be newfound use of those Avios I earn all the time with British Airways to travel to newer places

Fun fact, Air Lingus was a member of the oneworld alliance till about 8 years back when it dropped out to pursue ambitions as a low-cost carrier.

How do you guys feel about the news?

Personally, I so wish there was an Indian carrier in the oneworld alliance as well. Sigh!

  1. Are not Aer Lingus award flights already able to be booked with BA Avios? They just need to be booked by phone.
