HDFC Bank SmartBuy Gyftr quietly slashes Amazon Fresh and Zomato purchase limits overnight

HDFC Bank has been running one of the oldest loyalty portals via SmartBuy. Of late, there have been more than usual changes, such as 5X HDFC Bank Points on Voucher Shopping via Woohoo, 5X HDFC Bank Points on Adani Duty Free Shopping, and the earlier fiasco around the 5X / 3X on SmartBuy Gyftr Earning.

HDFC Bank taps downward on limits to buying Amazon Fresh and Zomato Gift Cards

HDFC Bank has quietly implemented another round of changes to the monthly purchase limits on the SmartBuy Gyftr platform, significantly reducing the amount cardholders can spend on some of the most popular grocery and food delivery vouchers. The changes appear to have gone live overnight and affect Amazon Fresh and Zomato vouchers in particular, both of which have seen their monthly purchase limits cut by 60%.

As per the revised limits now visible on the HDFC SmartBuy Gyftr platform, the monthly purchase caps stand as follows:

  • Croma: INR 75,000 per month
  • Vijay Sales: INR 75,000 per month
  • Amazon Pay Gift Cards: INR 10,000 per month
  • Amazon Shopping Vouchers: INR 10,000 per month
  • Flipkart: INR 10,000 per month
  • Myntra: INR 10,000 per month
  • Swiggy Money: INR 10,000 per month
  • Zepto: INR 10,000 per month
  • V-Mart: INR 15,000 per month
  • Amazon Fresh: INR 2,000 per month
  • BigBasket: INR 2,000 per month
  • Blinkit: INR 2,000 per month
  • Zomato: INR 2,000 per month

All thanks to Akash for compiling this list. The most notable changes are:

  • Amazon Fresh, which moved from INR 5,000 per month to INR 2,000
  • Zomato, which moved from INR 5,000 per month to INR 2,000
  • Blinkit moved from INR 1,500 to INR 2,000
  • BigBasked, which moved from INR 1,500 to INR 2,000

While Blinkit and BigBasket users have seen a modest increase, Amazon Fresh and Zomato users have experienced a substantial reduction.

Why does this matter?

For many HDFC Bank cardholders, SmartBuy Gyftr has become one of the most important channels for earning accelerated reward points.

Rather than spending directly on Amazon, Zomato, or grocery merchants, cardholders typically purchase vouchers through SmartBuy Gyftr and then use them for everyday spending. This allows them to earn bonus reward points, particularly on cards such as:

For Infinia and Diners Club Black users in particular, grocery, food delivery and Amazon voucher purchases have historically been among the easiest ways to generate monthly rewards.

The latest reduction means that users who previously purchased INR 5,000 worth of Amazon Fresh and Zomato vouchers every month can now purchase only INR 2,000.

Another step in the gradual tightening of SmartBuy

Long-time SmartBuy users will recognise a familiar pattern. Over the past few years, HDFC Bank has repeatedly tightened various aspects of the SmartBuy ecosystem:

  • Reduced accelerated reward earning opportunities.
  • Introduced monthly bonus caps.
  • Imposed category-wise purchase restrictions.
  • Reduced limits on popular gift vouchers.
  • Introduced additional compliance and monitoring mechanisms.

The strategy appears aimed at balancing customer acquisition and engagement benefits against the growing cost of funding accelerated rewards. As premium credit card portfolios have expanded significantly in India, particularly among Infinia and Diners Club Black customers, the volume of rewards generated through gift-card arbitrage has also increased substantially. It is therefore not surprising to see HDFC Bank continue to place guardrails around some of the most heavily used categories.

Among all the revisions, Amazon Fresh arguably stands out as the most significant. Many cardholders had incorporated Amazon Fresh vouchers into their monthly grocery budgets, particularly because Amazon’s grocery platform covers a wide range of household essentials, fresh produce and pantry items.

Reducing the monthly limit from INR 5,000 to INR 2,000 effectively reduces the maximum accelerated-rewards-eligible spend by INR 3,000 every month.

What should cardholders do now?

Cardholders who rely heavily on SmartBuy for groceries and food delivery may need to diversify their voucher purchases across multiple platforms. The revised limits suggest that HDFC Bank is attempting to spread spending across merchants rather than allowing disproportionate concentration on a few highly popular brands.

Users may now consider splitting grocery spending between:

  • Amazon Fresh
  • Blinkit
  • BigBasket
  • Zepto

Similarly, food delivery users may need to rely more on direct spending or alternate merchants once the monthly Zomato cap is exhausted.

Is this the end of more changes?

Probably not. The history of the SmartBuy platform suggests that HDFC Bank continuously reviews merchant-wise limits based on usage patterns, reward costs and commercial arrangements with partners. Popular merchants that see concentrated spending often become candidates for future restrictions, while newer categories occasionally receive higher limits to encourage adoption.

For now, Amazon Fresh and Zomato users are the biggest losers from the latest round of changes, while Blinkit and BigBasket users receive a marginal increase that only partially offsets the broader tightening.

Bottomline

HDFC Bank has quietly revised the monthly SmartBuy Gyftr purchase limits for grocery and food delivery vouchers. The biggest impact is on Amazon Fresh and Zomato vouchers, whose monthly limits have been reduced to INR 2,000. Blinkit and BigBasket limits have increased from INR 1,500 to INR 2,000, but the net effect remains negative for many premium HDFC cardholders who use SmartBuy as a key rewards-earning strategy.

As HDFC continues to fine-tune the economics of its rewards ecosystem, cardholders should expect further tweaks to voucher limits and bonus-earning opportunities.
