IndiGo, India’s largest airline, isn’t having the best of times of late. What started in December 2025 as a mass flight cancellation due to the airline’s crew scheduling collapsing has been followed by various chaotic incidents, including the recent diversions.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers steps down
Pieter Elbers, who arrived at IndiGo in 2022 after a lifetime spent at KLM, has stepped down from IndiGo as the CEO at the close of business on March 10, 2026, which is today. Pieter was charged with the international expansion of the airline, and he made some massive strategic moves in his time at the airline, such as the launch of the IndiGo Stretch product, the loyalty programme Bluchip, the order of the IndiGo A350s towards expansion of the airline into the widebody space, the launch of XLR flights and the deal with Norse Atlantic to launch damp-leased operations into Europe. The airline also maintained a 60% plus domestic marketshare.

Pieter Elbers
Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, shall, in the interim, assume management of the airline’s affairs until the Company announces the arrival of a new leader, which is expected in short order.
It is being interpreted that the meltdown in December 2025 was the reason that Pieter exited the company, whether by choice or under pressure we don’t know. Rahul Bhatia, the MD, wrote to the organisation and said this,
What happened last Dec should never have taken place. Our customers didn’t deserve it. Nor did all of you, especially frontline employees who bore most of the brunt for no fault of theirs. I wish to place on record my indebtedness to all my colleagues who carried the Company’s cross with grace and dignity, & ploughed through sleepless nights to restore operational integrity. You are indeed the living spirit of IndiGo.
Bottomline
IndiGo’s CEO Pieter Elbers resigned today and was relieved of his duties with immediate effect. The Managing Director, Rahul Bhatia, will manage the airline in the interim until a new CEO is announced. The announcement of his resignation came as a shock to many, but it seems he left because of the airline’s December meltdown.
What do you make of Pieter Elbers’ resignation from IndiGo?
