Taj Hotels starts work on Taj Bandstand in Mumbai

Taj Hotels has just launched a project to develop the Taj Bandstand, replacing the iconic Sea Rock Hotel, which was closed down many years ago after the Mumbai Blasts of the 1990s.  Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) will begin constructing on the sea-facing plot in Bandra in the second half of 2025. The Bhoomi Pujan was done today.

Taj Bandstand breaks ground.

Taj Bandstand, spread over 2 acres, will house 330 rooms and 85 service apartments, with multiple dining options, convention spaces and other facilities. The project will also include developing and maintaining the surrounding area with landscaped gardens, sporting and recreation activities, and entertainment options, paying tribute to the city’s diverse and rich cultural heritage. The hotel and complex will be located directly across from the Taj Lands End, the other Taj property in Bandra West.

The Bhoomi Pujan occurred on February 10, 2025, in the presence of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis, and Mr. N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons.

Mr. Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer at IHCL, said on the occasion,

IHCL opened its first hotel – The Taj Mahal Palace, in Bombay in 1903 and has for over a century woven itself into the cultural fabric of the city. Taj Bandstand, a testament to this legacy will be the torchbearer of the iconic brand Taj for the next century. Envisioned to be a defining edifice of Mumbai’s skyline, this landmark development is a tribute to Mumbai’s spirit, its people, and its growing global prominence.

Taj will begin construction on the project in 2025 and expect to complete it within four years. With the addition of this hotel, IHCL will have 17 hotels in Mumbai, including five under development.

The Iconic Sea Rock Hotel

Sea Rock was suburban Mumbai’s first five-star hotel, built in 1978. ITC took over operations in 1986. The hotel was among the targets of the bomb attacks on Mumbai in 1993, and since then, it has not reopened. In 2005, the promoters of the Claridges Hotel of Delhi purchased the property, and subsequently, IHCL came into the picture, buying the property from them. It took a long time to get the environmental clearances and close out the litigation, and everything was closed out in 2020.

Bottomline

Residents of Bandra, Mumbai, should look forward to seeing another new hotel on the skyline in the coming years. Work on the Taj Bandstand will commence in 2025. The hotel should be up and running by 2030, and it will be integrated with service apartments, a convention centre and many other amenities.
