Bengaluru Airport Terminal 2 will soon let you retain your laptops and electronics in bags for scanning

Passengers flying through Bengaluru Airport’s Terminal 2 might soon be in for a pleasant surprise, as the airport is upgrading the scanning infrastructure, and you will be able to keep your electronics inside your bag for a scan.

Bengaluru Airport’s Terminal 2 to launch trials for new security systems

Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator of KIA, will launch a trial run for CTX scanning machines in the next few days. Initially, the system will only be utilised for domestic passengers and will be operational in December 2023.

Using the new CTX Machines will mean that passengers will no longer need to remove personal electronic devices, such as laptops and phones, from their handbags at the security check before they get to the airside of the terminal, akin to other airports such as London Heathrow which use this technology. CTX Machines allow the security staff to take a three-dimensional view of the contents of the bags without having to inspect the bag for explosive detection physically. This will also result in a reduction in the number of trays needed per passenger during security screening.

This will be combined with full-body scanners, of which BIAL has installed three at Terminal 2. The use of full-body scanners will usually take three seconds to scan a passenger and give an all-clear or an image of the suspect area where further investigation is needed. That would mean that a wand-type metal detector won’t be run on the passenger anymore.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) had ordered all major airports handling 50 lakh passengers to install 3D CTX machines for cabin checks by the year’s end, but progress has been slow.

Bottomline

Passengers passing through Bengaluru Terminal 2 in December 2023 may be in for a treat, with patdowns giving way for a full body scan with a machine and baggage scanning, allowing for you to keep liquids and electronics in the bag itself rather than having to remove them and put them in a separate tray.

What do you think of these enhancements for Bengaluru Terminal 2 regarding security processes and passenger experience?
