Air Canada has announced today that the airline will resume flights to Mumbai, its second destination in India. Air Canada’s Mumbai flights will operate from Toronto via London Heathrow, opening up new possibilities for the carrier and the Indian population.
The planned service between Toronto and Mumbai via London-Heathrow will be operated with Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft featuring three cabins of service for customers to choose from, including lie-flat seats in Signature Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class. With the addition of this flight, Air Canada will have four routes operating to India:
- Toronto-Mumbai: Seasonal daily flights resume October 29 via London Heathrow
- Toronto-Delhi: Daily flights remain year-round
- Vancouver-Delhi: 3 weekly flights resume on October 1. Outbound flight includes a technical stop in Dublin for operational purposes.
- Montreal-Delhi: 3 weekly flights remain year-round
The addition of this flight will mean there will be a fifth-freedom flight offered for those flying between Mumbai and London Heathrow, as well as London Heathrow and Toronto. So, passengers on these routes could potentially hop on these flights as well to experience Air Canada’s hospitality. Passengers will also be able to connect onwards on other Star Alliance carriers such as United to fly to the US and other markets as well, so this is a great route to be activated. In all probability, this was done because of the Ukraine – Russia war, which does not allow Air Canada access to Russian overflight anymore, but this is a creative solution.
On the occasion, Mark Galardo, Senior Vice President, Network Planning and Revenue Management, at Air Canada, said,
We are also excited to return to Mumbai, India’s largest city and an important financial, commercial, and entertainment hub, complementing our 13 weekly flights from Canada to Delhi. Our Mumbai services are scheduled to operate with a stop in London Heathrow, offering connectivity to more than a dozen Air Canada and Star Alliance partner United Airlines flights between North America and London, as well as additional options for travel between the UK and India. The India market remains very important to Air Canada, and we are committed to resuming our currently paused non-stop services on Toronto-Mumbai and Vancouver-Delhi when circumstances allow.
Bottomline
Air Canada is launching flights between Mumbai and Toronto, which will make a halt at London Heathrow. This flight will be open to those who want to fly from Mumbai to London or to transfer to other Star Alliance member carriers from London Heathrow as well. The flights will operate for six months only, from October 2022 to March 2023 (the North Winter Schedule)

Great stuff! Connecting in LHR is quite smart since it solves the BOM runway problem and ensures almost full flights as almost every United or Air Canada flight can connect onto it giving one stop access to all the hubs in North America…
Waiting for AI to share that possibility with the AMDLHR flight or for Air Canada/United to start their own! One can only hope!
