South Korea removes quarantine for fully-vaccinated travellers; Indians with Covishield won’t have to quarantine anymore

The impact of getting vaccinated is starting to bear fruit for those who have already received both their jabs. South Korea has joined the select club of countries at the moment, which is opening up to travellers.

South Korea withdraws quarantine for vaccinated travellers

South Korea has decided to exempt some travellers who have received their CoVid-19 vaccine shots overseas from a mandatory two-week quarantine, as per the Central Disaster Management Headquarters of South Korea. The quarantine exemption was only applicable to people fully vaccinated against CoVid-19 in South Korea.

However, exempt travellers will have to be vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved by the WHO. The new requirement does not remove the need for testing to arrive in South Korea. Indians vaccinated with double doses of the Covishield vaccine will be able to enter South Korea freely. However, as per ANI, those inoculated with Covaxin will have to remain in quarantine for two weeks. This restriction, however, does not apply to heads of state and high dignitaries.

The new rules will apply as of July 1, 2021, for those who are citizens or expatriates based in South Korea and those who are going to visit South Korea to visit family or visit for business, academics, or public interest.

Bottomline

South Korea will open up to fully-vaccinated travellers, those who have had the WHO-approved vaccines as of July 1. There will no longer be the need for them to quarantine for two weeks anymore. This is a good sign pointing towards the world slowly opening up for vaccinated travellers.

  1. Does this mean that as a US citizen I will be able to visit w/o quarantine for tourism as long as I am vaccinated with an approved vaccine and am tested prior to boarding in the U S?

    • You have to be either visiting your immediate family members (only spouse, parents, or spouse’s parents; not siblings or relatives), or the reasons stated above (visit for business, academics, or public interest) to be exempt from quarantine requirements. Also, you have to apply for a quarantine exemption to the Korean overseas embassy or consulate, submit the required forms, and receive the quarantine exemption from the Korean overseas embassy or consulate to be exempt.

So, the key is visits for regular tourism doesn’t exempt you from the mandatory quarantine.
