Marriott Bonvoy has been cranking up their reaction to the CoVid-19 crisis. Earlier on, Marriott had granted a full-year extension to everyone who had earned their status in 2019 (for 2020), making their status valid through February 2022 instead of February 2021. Overnight, Marriott has made some more perks and promotional pricing happen for members, which should make things better for members when they finally get back on the road again.
Earlier on during the year, Marriott Bonvoy had also made a generous extension, extending points validity, status, free night awards and so on. However, seems the pandemic hasn’t played out per the initial estimates, so Marriott is now extending the validity of points and free night awards again.
Marriott Bonvoy extends points validity.
Ordinarily, Marriott Bonvoy points expire after 24 months of inactivity. However, Marriott Bonvoy had put a pause on points expiry through February 1, 2021. Now, this has been extended by another six months. Which means your points will not expire through August 1, 2021.
Marriott free night awards extended through August 2021
Marriott Bonvoy has also decided to extend the validity of free night award certificates. Initially, Free Night Certificates were extended through January 2021. Per Marriott Bonvoy, effective December 11, 2020, free night awards with an expiration date before July 31, 2021, will be automatically extended through August 1, 2021. This applies to free night awards received as an annual choice benefit, a co-brand card benefit, promotional free night or a travel package. Free night awards with an original expiry date before 2020 will not be eligible for the additional extension.
Bottomline
Marriott’s move to extend the validity of free night awards and points through 2021 is not the first such move, and perhaps won’t be the last. Loyalty programmes will continue to give members more time to redeem their rewards, given the current circumstances.
