Watch: Vistara’s first in-flight safety video which takes you around India and talks Yoga

One of the many ways Vistara has differentiated itself over the years has been by innovating and bringing in a different approach to various parts of the airline experience as compared to most of the other airlines in India. For instance, the introduction of India’s first Premium Economy product, launching in-flight streaming entertainment (quickly caught on by other airlines), partnering with Starbucks for coffee and so on. Now, as Vistara gets set to launch its true long-haul operations with their (relief) flights to London Heathrow, Vistara has also unveiled their first in-flight safety instruction video.

Vistara today released its first-ever in-flight safety video that will be displayed in its brand-new Airbus A321neo and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, starting August 27, 2020. The new safety video combines necessary safety instructions demonstrated through various Yoga asanas or postures.

The key objective, as per Vistara, is to demonstrate safety instructions in a visually appealing manner to hold the interest and attention of customers. It also aims to take customers on a relaxing journey to some of the most picturesque and off-beat locations across the length and breadth of India, showcasing the best of the country as a travel destination.

This makes Vistara the first Indian carrier to illustrate in-flight safety without the safety video being shot in-cabin only. Vistara also became the first airline in India and one of the very few globally to convey the safety messages through sign language in this video.

Vistara’s safety video was filmed over 14 days in cities/towns covering four Indian states and a Union Territory, featuring a senior member of the airline’s cabin crew and a certified Yoga instructor. The shooting of the video started in sub-zero temperatures up north in Ladakh against the spectacular backdrop of Pangong Lake and inside the Chemrey Monastery. It moved down south to the scenic Kannur beach and to the historic remnants of Hampi in Karnataka, then to the east on the extraordinary Dawki river in Meghalaya, and finally culminating on the grandiose cliffs of Malshej in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra.

There are two versions of this video, for both their planes with seatback options, the 787-9 version and the A321neo version. What I do find interesting though, is that Vistara used the equipment of their A320neo to shoot the video, accounting for the safety instructions for the bigger aircraft, for instance, the 3-point harness in J class on the 787-9. This just means the nuances of the A321neo/787-9 J Class are not included, something which other airlines do. Works fine from a safety perspective, but from a brand-building perspective, just a little nuance I’d have liked taken care of.

This is great work by Vistara, and one of the best safety videos I’ve seen recently. Although I’m sure doing that Yoga on the plane would have to wait for now with the Mask and the Visors blocking the ability to breathe in, breath out!

What do you think of the new Vistara Safety Video?
