Jet Airways acquires 6 Boeing 777 aircraft from lessors

In 2019, when Jet Airways collapsed and suspended operations, the airline had most of its fleet on lease, which flew back to their lessors or repossessed in India. However, some of the planes were on finance leases, where Jet Airways was going to eventually get to acquire those aircraft. Here is a full list of the remaining Jet Airways widebodies that we had published back in 2019.

Six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft of Jet Airways were parked in Mumbai (3), Delhi (2) and one was stuck in Amsterdam when the airline ran out of cash. These aircraft had very small amounts left to be paid on them, after which they could become Jet Airways owned aircraft. However, given there was no cash in the airline, they could not get those planes.

In June 2020, Jet Airways’ Interim Resolution Professional managed to sell some commercial property owned by the airline in Mumbai’s tony Bandra Kurla Complex, in a building which carried its name as well. The transaction closed out at the reserve price of INR 490 Crores (USD 65 million).

Jet Airways was able to use a part of the money to get the title rights of these six aircraft, for a sum of USD 13 million. The following Boeing 777-300ERs are now going to be owned by the airline itself:

  • VT-JEM
  • VT-JES
  • VT-JEW
  • VT-JET
  • VT-JEU
  • VT-JEV

All of these planes are over a decade old, and heavy by global standards, given the very heavy first-class suites installed on these aircraft. And given the CoVid-19 induced glut of parked airplanes around the globe, there may not be much value to be realised from them at the moment as well. So, I am not sure what use would these aircraft be at the moment, or will they be further sold by the airline to release some cash?

Along with the planes, they also got their original engines back.

Bottomline

Jet Airways finally owns 6 Boeing 77Ws but in a very shabby condition. These aircraft would need a lot of work to be made airworthy again, and at the current time, it might make no sense to try and fly them.

What do you think will happen with these 777s? Will they be flown again or sold for scrap?
