IndiGo celebrates 20 years with giveaway of 20,000 free flight tickets: Here’s how to get yours

IndiGo has kicked off celebrations for its 20th anniversary with one of its biggest customer promotions to date. Instead of announcing a conventional fare sale, the airline is giving away 20,000 free domestic flight tickets to customers who book directly with the airline over the next three days.

The campaign, branded “IndiGoFree”, runs from August 4 to August 6, 2026, and offers customers the opportunity to have the entire fare for their booking refunded, subject to a cap of INR 10,000 per PNR.

IndiGo’s 20th birthday celebration comes with free flights

The promotion coincides with IndiGo completing two decades of operations on August 4, 2026. Over the past 20 years, the airline has grown from a low-cost carrier with a handful of Airbus A320 aircraft into India’s largest airline and one of the world’s fastest-growing carriers. Today, IndiGo operates a fleet of more than 430 aircraft, flies nearly 2,200 daily services, serves over 95 domestic and 40 international destinations, and carried more than 123 million passengers during FY26.

Unlike the airline’s regular anniversary sales, which usually revolve around discounted fares or ancillary offers, this year’s campaign is structured as a lucky draw that rewards customers after they have booked.

How the IndiGoFree offer works

To be eligible, customers need to make a domestic booking directly through IndiGo during the promotional period. Eligible booking channels include:

  • IndiGo’s website
  • The IndiGo mobile application
  • 6Eskai, IndiGo’s AI-powered virtual assistant

Bookings must be completed between August 4 and August 6, 2026.

After the booking window closes, IndiGo will randomly select eligible customers. Those selected will receive an email and WhatsApp message inviting them to answer a simple question. Customers get three attempts to answer correctly. Those who do will receive a refund of their booking fare, up to INR 10,000 per PNR, with refunds expected to be processed within 3-5 business days.

The number of Selected Participants shall be:

  • Day 1: 10,000
  • Day 2: 5,000
  • Day 3: 5,000

Which bookings qualify?

The promotion is fairly broad in terms of eligible travel. According to IndiGo, the offer covers:

  • Domestic flights only
    • Economy Class and IndiGoStretch bookings
    • One-way and Return journeys

International flights are excluded from the promotion. The booking also needs to be made through IndiGo’s own direct channels, meaning reservations made through online travel agencies, corporate booking portals or travel agents are not expected to qualify.

This isn’t an instant free ticket

One important distinction is that customers are not receiving a free ticket immediately at the time of booking. Instead, passengers first pay for their booking as usual. They then become eligible for the random selection process. Only those chosen by IndiGo and who subsequently answer the verification question correctly will receive a refund of the fare.

In effect, the promotion is closer to a post-purchase cashback campaign than an upfront fare discount. The airline has capped refunds at INR 10,000 per PNR, meaning bookings above that value will only receive reimbursement up to the specified limit.

Why this promotion matters

Airlines frequently celebrate anniversaries with promotional fares, but refund-based campaigns of this scale are relatively uncommon in India.

For IndiGo, the giveaway serves multiple objectives. It marks an important milestone in the airline’s history, encourages customers to book directly through its own digital channels rather than intermediaries, and creates significant engagement by combining random selection with an interactive quiz before issuing refunds. Industry observers also note that direct bookings help airlines reduce distribution costs while strengthening customer relationships.

Bottomline

IndiGo’s IndiGoFree campaign is one of the more interesting airline anniversary promotions we’ve seen in recent years. Rather than offering discounted fares across the board, the airline is effectively giving 20,000 customers a chance to fly free by refunding their booking after a simple quiz.

If you’re already planning domestic travel over the coming months, it may be worth making your booking directly through IndiGo before August 6, 2026. You might just end up getting your ticket for free.
