Review: Hotel Grand Hyatt Mumbai

I’ve been spending a lot of time away from home recently, and I just wanted to spend some downtime over the a weekend. However, that was not going to be possible if I decided to stay home because something or the other would have been tugging for my attention. Owing to this, I decided to spend a weekend in the hotels, and I spent one night at the Grand Hyatt Mumbai, and another at the Hyatt Regency Mumbai.

While I’d been to the Grand Hyatt Mumbai a lot of times, I’d never stayed there. So, after a long day at work, I headed straight to the hotel and arrived there about 6 PM. I landed up at the check-in desk in the lobby, where the front desk offered to send me across to the lounge for checking me in. Since there was not much to be done, I asked them to get me checked in the lobby itself. The lobby itself looked roomy and stunning with a massive window front to get in light.

I was upgraded to a Grand Club Room, being a Diamond member, and allocated a city view room. I had no clue of what views to expect, so I went with the allocated room. Here are some pictures of the room.

The bathroom had a soak tub, ready with some salts and soap waiting along. Alongside, there was a rain shower.

Bathroom amenities were the standard for Hyatt in India, Forest Essentials. I got introduced to these amenities during my stays at Taj, and till date I sometimes go back to the Forest Essentials stores to buy their stuff.

The standard fruit amenity was waiting in the room, when I checked in. For the Diamond amenity, I went with 1000 points.

In the evening, I stepped into the lobby for the evening cocktails and canapés in the Grand Club lounge to which I had access. The views from here were stunning. The interesting concept I’ve found in some Hyatt hotels is, the Club levels are directly connected to the lounge via a staircase. This is true for the Grand Hyatt Mumbai as well as the Hyatt Regency Mumbai.

The Grand Club also had a very roomy big window which pointed to the water landscaping inside the hotel, and had a few seats along the window front as well. Here are some pictures of the Grand Club Lounge.

For the evening canapés, the selection was a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian hot snacks being served straight from the kitchen. There was Paneer and prawns that evening, and the Paneer was pretty mind blowing. Enough for me to have a couple of helpings to myself.

Also, a selection of crudites, tapas, cold cuts and desserts. The bar was pretty big, and the crew that evening knew their wines. So, I settled for an interesting Merlot to sip upon that evening.

The hotel has a selection of restaurants, including the very popular China House and Soma (Indian food). However, I was in the lounge for a couple of hours, and then I did not feel like getting any dinner, so I passed and wound up in my room.

The next morning, I went with the breakfast in the lounge itself. The breakfast spread had changed from the last time I’d heard about it, to include a small assortment of hot breakfast items as well. There were Alu Paranthas, Idlis and a selection of eggs which the kitchen could do for you. Apart from that, there was the usual assortment of fruits, juices, bakery items and cold cuts being presented.

I managed to get some work done after this, and then about noon, I requested the hotel to drive me to the Hyatt Regency Mumbai, which is situated next to the airport. They did this in lieu of the airport transfer for me.

Overall, this hotel was a good stay. However, with the hotel being a destination for many an events and conferences, it does tend to be teeming with people at almost all times. Also, the hotel has an Asian dim-lighting touch, which was something I did not like too much, as I tend to prefer natural lighting, and there wasn’t enough going around in this hotel.
