Just Today: American Express offering Double Membership Rewards on all spends

American Express has been taking good care of their cardholders during the Pandemic. For the premium cardholders, Amex has the American Express Double Points & Double Redemption Value going on, and the Platinum & Centurion Cardholders also got an “Everyday Spend Offer”.

Now, just for one day, American Express in India has launched a promotion offering Double Membership Rewards points for all their cardholders across the other card ranges as well.

Amex Double Points Offer

Just for spends made on July 1, 2020, you will earn 2X Membership Rewards Points for all eligible spends done online or in stores (including on supplementary cards). There is no registration required for this promotion, neither is there a minimum spend. This means you get one Bonus Membership Rewards Point for every INR 50 spent. The maximum number of bonus MR awarded will be 2,000, which means spends up to INR 1,00,000 will be rewarded with this bonus.

The offer is targetted, so check if you were targetted before you go for a spending spree. The following cardmembers would have received the offer:

The Offer is not valid for American Express Corporate Cards cards issued by a third party (ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, etc.). The Bonus Membership Rewards Points will get credited to Cardmember’s account by September 30, 2020.

Cardmembers will not earn Membership Rewards Points on their American Express Card as part of this offer for all their spending on fuel, insurance and utility (electricity, water and gas bills) payments. Fuel includes petrol, diesel, CNG from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Utility services include providers of household/domestic electricity, gas and water. These providers can be government departments and agencies including local, state, municipal organizations, public housing societies and apartment associations.

Here is the link to the T&C for the promotion.

Bottomline

If you have any of the aforementioned cards and were planning any spends, perhaps today is a good day to “maximise” by putting those spends on the card today.

  1. Looks like Amex is the only company serious about boosting card spends during the pandemic. Every other card at least in India, wants you to spend less and earn less. Thank you AmEx

    • While Amex has spend offers, that’s partially due to spends and annual fee are their only two sources of income on personal cards in India. Banks like SCB and Citi have been very aggressive on loans front for CCs, as well as credit limit increases. RBL has been sending pre-approved cards without CIBIL hit by just opting in via email. So some banks other than Amex have been active!

That said, I would have liked to see better handling from Citi Prestige and HDFC Infinia teams. All Prestige could come up with was Spotify cash back, while gutting the Big Basket monthly offer. So net negative!

      • AmEx has lost a lot of business. FreeCharge rejects all AmEx transactions and they can’t seem to do much about it. Merchants that are tied up (like walmary easyday) are not using AmEx machines anymore.

All retailers refuse them. Their OTP SMS vendor also has been barring all OTP sms’es to Full block DND numbers (read: Risk in case of fraudulent transaction).

I’ve personally complained them how merchants have started to boycott their product. To add to it, LazyPay (PayU), VCard(RBL) are some quite interesting UPI based credit products that have more acceptance.

To top it all is substandard customer support. Citi’s level 1 has been more superior i felt while reporting fraudulent transactions (citi personnel took the ownership to get it reported, AmEx guys argued for 25mins to connect with fraud protection services team).

They should realize its their survival now at stake. They can live in the superiority complex myth with obnoxious 3-3.5% MDR when UPI is a great alternative.
