American Airlines will launch service between New York JFK and New Delhi in October 2021

American Airlines, the oneworld member airline, based in the USA, has announced a second route launch to India, which will launch in 2021.

Beginning October 31, 2021, American will launch a nonstop service from New York (JFK) to New Delhi (DEL) on a Boeing 777-200 to meet the solid local demand. With Qatar Airways partnership and previously announced Seattle (SEA) to Bengaluru (BLR) route, which is now scheduled to launch in October 2021, American claims that it will offer customers more ways to fly between the United States and India than any other airline partnership.

Flights to New Delhi will connect customers to India’s capital territory three times per week and then daily during the holiday peak from November 17, 2021, to January 3, 2022.

The 7,318-mile-long flight will be operated by a Boeing 777-200 from the American Airlines fleet, which is configured with 273 seats:

  • 37 flat-bed Business class seats
  • 24 recliner Premium Economy seats
  • 66 Main Cabin Extra seats
  • 146 Standard Seats

American also plans to launch a flight between Seattle and Bangalore on October 31, 2021. This new flight will also compete with a San Francisco – Bangalore flight coming up in the same time frame from United.

What befuddles me is this doubleheader into India at the same time. Remember, American closed its only non-stop flight into India (Chicago/Delhi) in 2012 during its reorganisation and hasn’t looked back at India in years. And now, in the year of the pandemic, it wants to come back with two flights.

India – USA flights, are profitable; no questions asked there given the elimination of one-stop competition for the time being and the focus on non-stop. Still, something must be there which has kept Delta away from re-launching their flight between New York to Mumbai yet, and that part of the equation does not add up.  Is it AA just trying to corner slots and then see how the economics works later?

  2. I was really hoping mumbai would have been the option instead of BLR, but clearly I don’t see what AA sees…what is going to hurt the award travelers is the lack of partners to redeem miles. I believe Jet airways used to be AA partner, but with them gone AA doesn’t have any one to join a full award iternary for non DEL/BLR has vistara, but they have stopped non stop flight…but still one can redeem skypesos with delta partners… united and star alliance on the other hand has shit ton of options making them quite untouchable on this route… probably also why delta bailed out quickly…we were luck to take that JFK-BOM flight though…
