Air India Express will become the first airline to operate international flights from the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking another important milestone for one of India’s newest major airports.
The Air India-owned low-cost carrier has announced the launch of direct flights between Navi Mumbai and Abu Dhabi from July 15, 2026, making it the first international operator from the airport and providing residents of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region with a new gateway to the UAE.
Navi Mumbai gets its first international route
According to Air India Express, the airline will initially operate the route twice weekly from July 15, 2026, before increasing services to three weekly flights from July 29, 2026. The flights will initially operate on Wednesdays and Fridays, with Sunday flights added later in the month. The schedule is timed to cater to both point-to-point traffic and onward connections through Abu Dhabi.
Bookings for the flights are already open through Air India Express’ website, mobile application and travel agency channels.
Another milestone for Navi Mumbai Airport
The announcement is significant because it marks the first international service scheduled from Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is expected to gradually absorb traffic from the capacity-constrained Mumbai airport over the coming years.
While domestic operations from Navi Mumbai began in December 2025, with airlines such as IndiGo and Air India Express, international connectivity has always been viewed as a key component of the airport’s long-term success. The UAE market, particularly Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, remains one of the largest international aviation markets from western India, making Abu Dhabi a good first choice.
The move also highlights the Air India Group’s intent to establish an early presence at Navi Mumbai Airport. Air India Express was among the first airlines to commit significant capacity to the new airport and has already announced domestic services to Bengaluru and Delhi.
With the addition of Abu Dhabi, Air India Express says it will operate 30 weekly flights from Navi Mumbai, connecting the airport to Delhi, Bengaluru and Abu Dhabi.
The Mumbai-Abu Dhabi corridor has traditionally been dominated by full-service and low-cost operators alike, thanks to strong demand generated by business travel, visiting friends and relatives (VFR) traffic, tourism and labour movement.
Launching the route from Navi Mumbai gives Air India Express an opportunity to tap into demand from the rapidly growing suburbs of Navi Mumbai, Thane, Panvel, Kharghar and the broader Raigad region, while also providing an alternative to travellers who would otherwise need to battle traffic to reach Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, such as those from Pune.
What comes next?
As airlines continue to evaluate opportunities at Navi Mumbai Airport, the Gulf is likely to emerge as one of the first major international growth markets. Destinations such as Dubai, Sharjah, Muscat, Doha and Kuwait City are natural candidates given the strong traffic flows between western India and the Middle East.
For Air India Express specifically, the Abu Dhabi launch could be a precursor to a broader international build-up from Navi Mumbai as the airport scales up operations and more slots become available.
The launch also signals to competing carriers that Navi Mumbai is now ready to begin handling international operations, potentially accelerating route announcements from other Indian and foreign airlines in the months ahead.
